Imam Muhammad ibn Idris al-Shafi'i's "Al-Risala" is a cornerstone in the science of Usul al-Fiqh (principles of Islamic jurisprudence), and is even considered the first independent work in this field. The book aims to establish a clear methodology for deriving Sharia rulings from their primary sources, the Quran and the Sunnah.
Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi said about it when he looked at it: "I have not looked at the book Al-Risala of al-Shafi'i except that I found new benefit in it."
Al-Shafi'i wrote the book Al-Risala twice. The first is known as the "Old" Risala, which he wrote in Mecca when he was young, in response to a request from Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi. As for the currently known version, it is the "New" Risala, which he wrote in Egypt. The book is one of the books that al-Rabi narrated from al-Shafi'i. The esteemed scholar Ahmad Muhammad Shakir verified and explained the book.
"Al-Risala" is considered one of the most famous and important books of al-Shafi'i, as it had a great impact on Islamic jurisprudence and its principles. The book provides reliable legal foundations that were missing before al-Shafi'i, as it derives methods for dealing with Sharia evidence, making it an important reference for all students and those interested in the principles of jurisprudence.
